CHENEY, WA — Governor Jay Inslee has officially proclaimed October 2 as Taste Washington Day, coinciding with the start of National Farm to School Month in the state.
This day showcases the important link between farms and schools, providing Washington’s children with the opportunity to enjoy and learn about the diverse array of healthy, delicious, and locally produced foods.
The Cheney School District is leading the charge, making local sourcing a top priority in its cafeterias. From fresh Washington salmon to apples picked from nearby farms, the district is committed to providing students with high-quality, locally sourced meals—all funded through state grants and offered free to students through a new program.
“Fresh always tastes better, looks better, is prettier,” said LJ Klink, Executive Chef and Director of Nutrition Services for the district. “We’re local, supporting local farmers, local businesses, and local people. Those parents may work at those farms, and their kids go to our schools.”
Chef Klink emphasized the importance of providing students with quality foods, noting that it contributes to their overall success in school, both in the classroom and on the field.
As Taste Washington Day unfolds, schools across the state are embracing the celebration, reinforcing the important role that local agriculture plays in the health and well-being of students.
