SPOKANE, Wash. — Drivers on Spokane’s Division Street may need to buckle up for some changes ahead.
The City of Spokane and Spokane Transit Authority are exploring new ways to zone the land around the busy street in anticipation of two major traffic projects in the near future.
Permits have been filed for STA to build new platforms at existing bus stations along Division. This is part of the Bus Rapid Transit Program which – along with construction on the North Spokane Corridor – could impact the flow of traffic on the street significantly.
City project planners are looking for ways to improve the accessibility of the land along Division. The goal is to find out what kind of changes would help people get to where they need to be safely.
“The majority of the time I’m on a bike so I have to ride on the sidewalk or I get hit by cars because there’s no place for us to ride on the asphalt where we’re supposed to ride,” said Kevin Bauerly who has lived in Spokane for three years.
Transit-oriented development along Division would help people like Kevin navigate Spokane easier without a car.
“I’m on foot right now,” Bauerly said. “I don’t have a vehicle so it’s my only mode of transportation.”
The study is still in the concept development phase.
Spencer Gardner, a project planner from the city, said “in some areas, this might include zoning changes to provide opportunities for new development around transit stops. In other areas, there may not be significant changes.”
