WHITMAN COUNTY, Wash. — A health alert has been issued for residents of Whitman County due to whooping cough cases at Washington State University.
Whitman County Public Health said as of Tuesday, two people have been diagnosed with B. pertussis, the bacteria that causes whooping cough. It is most common among people who live together or spend time together indoors.
Symptoms can begin like any other cold. Coughing spells can be severe and some kids may have a high-pitched whoop after the cough. Complications can include pneumonia, seizures, stopping breathing and death.
According to Public Health, infants, pregnant people, healthcare workers and childcare workers are at the highest risk for the disease.
Public Health believes there are more cases of the disease in the community
Contact your healthcare provider if you have been exposed to pertussis.
Public Health said to make sure you are up to date on your vaccines and stay home if you’re sick.
