SPOKANE, Wash. — The city of Spokane Valley is initiating the Indiana Avenue Preservation Project, which involves replacing the roadway from the intersection about 800 feet east on Indiana Avenue with new concrete.
Jill Smith, the city’s communications manager, emphasized the importance of awareness during this construction phase: “We ask that drivers be extra aware and not be distracted by phones or anything else while driving through any construction zones.”
Currently, Indiana Avenue has been reduced to one lane in each direction, with a speed limit lowered to 25 miles per hour.
Minor backups were reported on Monday as cars turned east onto Indiana from Sullivan Road, but delays were minimal.
However, the city plans to close the I-90 off-ramp at Indiana Avenue soon, which could lead to longer delays.
Once the Indiana Avenue off-ramp closes, drivers will need to exit at Sullivan Road to access Indiana Avenue. Typically, this light doesn’t allow a right turn, but the city says they will temporarily permit this during construction.
Amid the construction, Panera Bread remains open.
Diane Johnson, team manager at Panera, expressed initial concerns but noted community support: “Based on what I’ve heard from the community and the neighbors, you’re still going to be able to access us pretty easily.”
Panera Bread is located next to the I-90 off-ramp at Indiana, so drivers will need to use the Sullivan exit to reach the restaurant during construction.
Johnson added, “We also have many ways for people to access us via the internet, so they can order ahead on our app or website and pick it up, either in-store, through our drive-thru, or for delivery. We hope people will still find a way to support us.”
