Spokane, WA — The back-to-school season is in full swing with classes now underway for many local students including those in the Spokane Public Schools District.
This year at Garfield Elementary brings new changes, starting with a new principal. George Gessler, who has spent 30 years as a teacher, has taken on the role of principal at the school.
As students returned to Garfield Elementary, they were greeted with enthusiasm. Children were seen reconnecting with old friends and meeting their new principal.
“We had staff here last week and held conferences with parents,” Gessler said. “Seeing the kids come in with their new clothes and shoes, excited to start their journey, is the biggest thing for us right now.”
Garfield Elementary serves its neighborhood with a Newcomer Center for students who are new to the United States and looking to improve their English language skills. Additionally, the school’s APPLE program, which stands for The Alternative Parent Participation Learning Experience, invites parents to get involved through volunteering.
Gessler expressed his excitement about continuing Garfield’s legacy as a community school. “The main thing is I’m just thankful to be here, thankful for this experience, and thankful to get the school year started,” he said.
