Spokane, WA — Students in Spokane go back to school next week. Although this is a thrilling time for kids, it’s also a time to be extra alert on the road.
SPD says they’ve seen distracted parents fail to yield to children crossing the sidewalk at intersections near schools.
“I want to stress on parents to make sure to clear those distractions from their head… concentrate on getting their kids to school safely and helping keep everybody else’s kids safe,” said Sgt. Teresa Fuller.
Sgt. Fuller’s top tips:
– reducing speed in school zones
– limiting distraction while driving
– making sure kids are not on technology while walking or biking to school.
“If your normal route takes you through a school zone, maybe avoid that next week,” said Sgt. Fuller. “If you have to go through those areas, keep your eyes out for kiddos.”
Sgt. Fuller says also make sure seatbelts are worn and encourage kids to wear helmets if biking or skateboarding to school.
SPD’s photo speed cameras will be in operation on Tuesday morning. There are eight cameras located at six elementary schools and one high school in Spokane. A speed ticket from these can cost you up to $450 dollars.
