COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Coeur d’Alene Firefighters will be hosting their Back-to-School Food Drive beginning September 1 at 4 p.m.
The Community Action Partnership Food Bank serves about 100 to 200 families a day. But during a tour of the facility, it was clear that there is a critical need for donations. Shelves are bare and coolers are nearly empty.
“The price of sending kids to school, especially in the beginning, can be costly,” said Darrell Rickard, the food bank program manager. “There are people right now who are just getting by. You add those extra expenses, and suddenly something has to be cut from the budget. We want people to spend their money on gas or their kids’ clothes and come here for food instead.”
That’s why the union Coeur d’Alene Firefighters Local 710 is hosting their food drive.
Firefighters will be trading in their usual gear for their vintage fire truck to go on a special journey to fight hunger. They will be driving around the city collecting both non-perishable food items and cash donations donations.
“We wanted to see if we could get out in the community, get some participation and help get some canned goods and donations for those that, those that need some help,” said Darren Tolan, Coeur d’Alene Firefighter and Paramedic said.
The food drive runs through Sept. 7, from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
