SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Over $500,000 in grant funding from the Washington State Department of Commerce is coming to child care centers in Spokane County.
According to the Commerce, the funds will be split between the St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, Sun City Child Development Center and The Nest, LLC. as part of the Early Learning Facilities Grant Program.
The funds will provide financial relief for child care providers to make renovations such as updated playground equipment, sanitation spaces, fencing, HVAC upgrades and light fixtures.
”These grants sustain critical facilities that give parents choices to meet their family’s needs and ensure more access and availability to high-quality child care,” said Commerce Director Mike Fong. “We know that child care is a barrier to employment for families, and we can advance economic opportunity for Washington’s families by ensuring children have a place to thrive.”
These grants are part of more than $7 million awarded to 64 early learning centers across the state.
The Commerce Department said requests for funding were more than triple the available funds. It worked with the Department of Children, Youth, and Families to examine important project criteria, such as the number of child care slots serving low-income families, the program’s location relative to other early learning centers and whether the project is in a rural or low-income area.
The Harvard Park Learning Center North in Spokane received 2021-23 funding that allowed the facility to adopt a more open floor plan, updated flooring and updated sinks and countertops.
