The city said it hopes the project will improves streets and sidewalks in the area.
New students said the detours have made it confusing to find their way around the area.
“The main roads is closed in the middle of campus, which kind of throws everything off. ” said Amelia Sherman who is going into her freshman year at WSU.
The project is expected to continue until October. For some businesses, this has meant a long, slower than usual summer.
“It has been a mess, all the traffic revisions,” said Neil’s Coffee and Ice Cream staff manager Drew Hayton. “It is hard to get around town sometimes.”
Despite the chaos, students are optimistic about what the beloved downtown area will look like when construction is over.
“More construction just means I will get to feel like I can better travel around here,” said WSU freshman, Collin Eliot.
