SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Zephyr FC named Jo Johnson as the first head coach in franchise history.
“I think my son has said it best. He’s just excited for the opportunity to see his mom be able to do this,” Johnson said. “It’s an opportunity for me also. For the players it’s amazing. But for me to have the opportunity to coach at this level, to inspire young female players that want to be coaches, there is a pathway. I’m appreciative of the organization for giving my that opportunity and platform.”
Johnson was serving as the assistant coach for the University of Tulsa since 2021.
She played for Paradise Valley Community College where she was named an NJCAA All-American and First-Team All ACCAC.
Johnson transferred to the University of Texas-El Paso where she earned Defensive Player of the Year, MVP and C-USA All-Conference honors.
She served as an assistant coach at UTEP after graduation followed by seven years as a high school coach for Jenks High School in Oklahoma.
Johnson also spent time as the interim head coach for the SIDE FC92 of the UWS, pro-am league.
Zephyr begin training camp in July.
