SPOKANE, Wash. — With Covid rates spiking in Spokane, how can parents keep their kids healthy as they head back to school this fall?
Wastewater testing in Spokane County shows a large increase in the amount of Covid detected since mid-August, just before the first day of school.
“Summer went so fast this year and we’re excited to be back to school, back with our friends, and kids love to run up, hug their friends, share their drinks, all of those things,” said Dr. Sarah d’Hulst, MD Primary Care Medical Director of Multicare Rockwood.
It can be challenging for parents to know what to do and when to send your kid back to school if they get sick.
Dr. d’Hulst said it’s important to monitor your child’s symptoms.
“So, if your child has a fever, if they’re just so exhausted, if for some reason they’re vomiting and not able to keep fluids down, keep them home,” she said.
Dr. d’Hulst also said it’s important to follow your school’s Covid guidelines, which you can find online or by calling your school’s front office.
CDC guidelines state that kids can return to school when, for 24 hours, their symptoms have improved and they have been fever-free without fever-reducing medication.
