SPOKANE, Wash. – Seven Spokane Police officers will not face charges related to the October 16, 2022 shooting of a man suspected of bringing fentanyl to the area.
According to the Spokane County Prosecutor, SPD officers were working to stop the suspect, Israel Garcia, from bringing a large amount of fentanyl pills to the Spokane area from Yakima.
Officers stopped Garcia’s car around 11:30 a.m. on October 16, 2022. The officers told those inside the car to get out with their hands up.
The Prosecutor’s Office said when Garcia got out of the car, he immediately began shooting at police, injuring one officer.
Police fired back and Garcia fell to the sidewalk next to the car.
Both the officer and Garcia survived their injuries.
The Prosecutor’s Office said investigators found two handguns, multiple cell phones, and over 15 thousand fentanyl pills in the car.
Garcia has been charged with multiple felony counts related to this shooting. The case is currently pending in federal court.
