SPOKANE, Wash. – It’s the third-straight week of extreme heat.
For local businesses, this is having a significant impact on their operations.
“People don’t come out when its 100 degrees, they stay home in the cool air conditioning,” said Kari Conner, the owner of Park Bench Cafe.
Usually, business owners like Park Bench Cafe, thrive during the summer with all the events bringing traffic into her area. But a heat wave like this can also make it hard to do their day-to-day work.
“It makes us really tired, and I know for a fact that I have been ringing people and completely blanking on orders because it is so hot,” said Ella Downs, an employee at Park Bench Cafe.
Kari said she made the decision to close early last week due to the extreme heat. This means hours had to be cut and a could mean changes for employee wages.
Blue Moon Garden and Nursery is a few miles away from Kari’s cafe and is dealing with some of the same issues. Teresa Palaia, the owner of the nursery said they had to close early twice last week because of the heat.
“It’s pretty quiet, we are getting some business, but it is definitely off,” said Teresa.
This month, Palaia said her revenue has dropped by around 60%.
Both local businesses encourage people to support as best as they can.
